MLB Sides & Totals: Look for the Orioles to take flight in the desert
There’s a full slate of games on tap today in MLB to start the weekend, and we found three spots that we like on today’s card.
Orioles TT o4.5 (-130) vs. Diamondbacks: The Orioles offense has been mashing right-handed pitching to the tune of an .801 OPS since Aug. 21, and they face a very ordinary righty starter in Zach Davies and a poor-performing Arizona bullpen. Laying 30 cents is a steep price, but 4.5 runs is just too low a number to pass on.
Pirates ML+105 vs. Cardinals: Two of the biggest dumpster fires in the league battle in a game that should mean very little to anyone but the players and perhaps some close friends and family, but we’ve found some edges we believe we can exploit. The Pirates have been the much better-hitting team since the calendar flipped to August. Pittsburgh also has a slight edge in the bullpen since Aug.1 and a sizeable advantage in the starting pitching matchup with Mitch Keller over Dakota Hudson. On top of all of that, we’re getting a little plus money. ‘Nuff said, we’re rolling with the Buccos here.
Giants ML+120 vs. Padres: Here’s one that, on the surface, we look like we might be on the wrong team, considering the Padres are sending a quality starter in Michael Wacha to the bump and the Giants counter with an opener in Tristan Beck. Beck is a stretched-out opener, capable of logging four innings, so the San Francisco pen won’t be as taxed as a bullpen can get when dealing with a typical one or two-inning opener. Also, Beck has been excellent in this role, especially against light-hitting teams, and despite the names on the back of the San Diego jerseys, they have been a weak lineup. Conversely, the Giants have been hitting righthanded hurlers very well over the last few weeks. Put it all together, and we like San Francisco tonight.
MLB Prop Plays: Lots to like on the pitcher strikeout market today
A full MLB card presents plenty of opportunities to cash in on our always-reliable prop bets.
Jake Irvin u5.5 K’s (-150): Irvin is not exactly a strikeout machine, and he faces a Marlins lineup that does not strike out much. Great combination for an under play.
Graham Ashcraft u5.5 K’s (-140): Our projections have Ashcraft at just a shade over four strikeouts, presenting an over 27% positive EV. Even having to lay serious juice, we like this play.
Patrick Sandoval o4.5 K’s (-112): Projected at 5.62 strikeouts tonight. Need we say more?
Touki Toussaint u5.5 K’s (+100): Toussaint can fan some batters, but he usually walks the ballpark first. We look for his wildness to make it a short night for Touki, making the under the way to go.
College Football Week 1: The Chippewas will hang tough against the Spartans
We got some very nice college football action on Thursday to set up what shapes up to be a terrific weekend ahead. Here are three more spots we like to cash this weekend.
Central Michigan +14 (-110) vs. Michigan St.: This is not a very good Michigan St. team! They have more holes than five-year-old socks on offense, particularly at quarterback and receiver. That means a steady dose of the run game and a shortened game makes getting two touchdowns even more appealing. Central Michigan has historically been good in this spot, going 11-3 against the spread in road openers, including a point spread cover at Oklahoma State last year. I employ multiple computer models to help me handicap, and all of them have this line off by 4-6 points. That’s enough for us to ride the Chippewas.
Oklahoma vs. Arkansas St. u58.5 (-115): This will be the typical Week 1 mismatch between a Power Five team and a small conference opponent. We don’t expect Arkansas St. to climb out of single digits in this one and for the game to be over by halftime. With a big matchup on the horizon versus SMU in Week 2 for Oklahoma, look for a vanilla offensive game plan from the Sooners in the second half, which will keep this one under the total.
Oregon St. vs. San Jose St. o55 (-110): Both offenses should have plenty of success on Sunday, with Oregon St. relying on a terrific rushing attack and the occasional big play from Clemson transfer quarterback DJ Uiagalelei. San Jose St. QB Chevan Cordeiro has shown the ability to make big plays against Power Five teams, tossing three touchdowns last week against USC. Expect more of the same here versus the Beavers. Neither defense, especially SJSU’s defense, should scare anyone, meaning 60 points is a distinct possibility.
That’s a wrap to a wild week gang. Again, make sure to check Twitter/X @give_me_wins for additional plays all holiday weekend long. Have fun this Labor Day weekend, but do it responsibly!🥂Look for some NFL plays in the Labor Day newsletter. Until then, we’ll see you at the pay window.
